Telugu is spoken by tens of millions of people across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and beyond, yet many voice AI platforms still list only Hindi among Indian languages. If your customers speak Telugu, the first filter is simple: does the agent actually hold a natural Telugu conversation on a phone line?

How to test a Telugu agent
- 1Call it from a normal mobile phone, not a browser demo, and speak the way your customers do, including Telugu mixed with English words.
- 2Check that it understands names, village and town names, numbers and dates said in Telugu.
- 3Interrupt it mid-sentence and correct a detail; a good agent stops, listens and confirms the correction.
- 4Ask a native speaker to rate how natural the replies sound, not just whether they are correct.
- 5Listen for reactions such as సరే, అవునా or అయ్యో: they should sound like a person, not a stretched or garbled word.
What our measurements show about expressive Telugu speech
Voice agents often try to sound warm by stretching words in text, such as వద్దూూూ. In October 2026 we measured how a production text-to-speech model (Cartesia sonic-3.6) reads written cues in Telugu, Hindi and English: 8 words per language, four written forms, three repetitions each.
Across the 24 isolated words, the mean duration over three repetitions was longer with an exclamation mark than with a full stop. The median increase in per-word mean pitch peak was about 72 Hz. These measurements come from one voice and one model; they do not establish that punctuation improves perceived naturalness in conversations or across other voices. They suggest a direction for further listening tests, not a change already applied to every HeyRik agent. The method, audio and data are prepared for publication as an open dataset.
